Gaze Painter is an experimental gaze-driven painting tool, built with accessibility in mind. This page explains what data the app processes, where it goes, and what control you have.

What the camera is for

The app uses your webcam to estimate where on the screen you are looking. Strokes start, follow your gaze, and end based on that estimate.

Camera frames stay on your device. They are processed entirely in your browser by an open-source library called WebGazer. No video, no photos, and no biometric data are uploaded to any server.

Your browser will ask for camera permission the first time you use the app. You can revoke it at any time:

What is stored

Two kinds of data are saved to your browser's local storage on this device:

Nothing else is stored. There are no accounts, no user IDs, no fingerprints.

If you save a painting, the image file is downloaded to your device. We don't keep a copy.

Cookies and tracking

The app does not use cookies. It does not include any third-party analytics, advertising, or social-media tracking pixels.

Hosting and server logs

The site is hosted on Amazon Web Services (S3 and CloudFront). When your browser fetches the page, AWS records standard server logs — your IP address, request time, browser user agent, and which file was requested. These logs are retained by AWS for operational purposes and are not joined to any user identity.

The WebGazer library is served from the same hosting account; it is not loaded from a third-party CDN.

Accessibility

Gaze Painter is built specifically for users who interact via gaze and assistive technologies. The intended target is WCAG 2.1 AA. If you encounter a barrier, please contact us so we can fix it.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect any data from children. Camera use by minors should be supervised by a parent or guardian.

Changes

If this policy changes materially — for example, if we add server-side storage of paintings — we'll update the date at the top of the page and surface a notice in the app.
